Nigel Barnett

Nigel Barnett is a Consultant in the Restructuring & Insolvency group at Dentons, based in London. Prior to stepping down from the partnership, he was the head of the group, having been with the firm for more than 35 years. His practice focuses on Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law.

Nigel is a former President of the Insolvency Lawyers' Association. Between 1999 and 2004, he served as the Lay Observer to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He currently serves as a Deputy Insolvency and Companies Court Judge in the High Court.

Nigel has been praised for his "commercial, no nonsense approach" and his ability to "think outside the box". Whilst Nigel has roots in litigation, most of his time has been devoted to being a "trusted advisor" to governments, companies, insolvency practitioners and boards of directors on the complex issues that arise from financially distressed businesses.

His experience includes advising the administrators of Petroplus' UK members on a hugely complex matter giving rise to unprecedented legal issues arising out of the regulation of an oil refining business, advising the Government of St Kitts and Nevis on potential restructuring options following the collapse of the country's sugar industry, advising the UK government and subsequently the provisional liquidators of the Carillion Group following its collapse, and acting for the English administrators of Lehman Brothers International Europe's parent company in the Waterfall litigation concerning the entitlements of parties to the billion pound surplus in the insolvency estate.

He completed his legal education at The College of Law in 1983.
